You have made the smart investment of your electrical vehicle. Now it is time to make sure that you have the correct charging station set-up at your home or office. In Denver, there is a lot of driving and now a lot of traffic. It’s great to know while you are sitting in traffic that you are not burning expensive fuel on I-25.
When you purchased your pure electric or plug-in hybrid car it most likely came with a Level 1 charging station. These are super easy because you only have to plug it into a standard 120-volt wall outlet and it should not require any special installation. If you bought the plug-in hybrid and it does not have a large battery nor does it need a lot of charges or perhaps you simply do not drive a lot, this should be all you need.
When should you invest in a Level 2 electric vehicle charging station? First there are a couple of things you need to know.
- What distance do you need to drive before you will be able to charge your EV?
- What is the make and model of your plug-in vehicle?
- Where is the closest electrical panel to where you plan to park your electrical vehicle?
- What size battery pack do you have?
Typically what you will find is the Level 2 charger which involves a professional Electrician to install can charge your battery faster and you can typically get 10-60 miles of range per hour of charging compared to a Level 1 charger. Another great feature about having a level 2 charger installed is that you can throw the level 1 charger in your car that came with it and has an emergency charger with you at all times.
There is also a Level 3 or DC Fast Charging option. They charge even faster and offer 60-100 miles of charge in just 20 minutes.
